What is the job of a Police and Crime Commissioner?

- To hold the Chief Constable to account for the performance of the police force
- Set the council tax precept level and the annual budget
- Produce a Police and Crime Plan which sets out the overall strategy for policing and crime reduction locally
- Publish an annual report stating how priorities have been met to enable greater public awareness of police and crime performance
- Be a voice for the public regarding police and crime matters
- Directly engage with the public and to seek their views (including those of victims) regarding policing and crime matters
- Play a leading role in wider community safety issues beyond policing
- Work with partners and the wider criminal justice system to help cut crime
- Commission crime prevention and victim support services
- Provide crime and disorder grants
- Collaborate and work alongside criminal justice agencies (such as the Crown Prosecution Service, Prison Service and youth
- offending teams) to provide an efficient and effective local criminal justice system
- Have regard to the Policing Protocol and Strategic Policing Requirement
- Appoint the Chief Constable and if necessary dismiss them
- Consider complaints against and matters of conduct in relation to the Chief Constable
- Appoint a Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner if they so wish
