Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones commends police officers at national bravery awards
12 July 2024
Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has extended her heartfelt congratulations to the courageous police officers who have been honoured at the national police bravery awards.
Sgt David Gibbs, PC Tim Clarkson, PC Scott Thomson, PC Nathan Fulton and PC Emma Davies from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary won the South East region award at the annual Police Federation event last night (Thursday 11 July).
The officers demonstrated exceptional valour and commitment to public safety, earning them well-deserved recognition, after they were confronted with a man holding a gun and armed with two explosive bags in Gosport last year.
The officers had gone to the man’s address to make an arrest regarding an un-related matter. When they entered the property the man was holding a gun. The man then activated explosive bags strapped to his body which began omitting smoke. Thankfully the makeshift bomb did not detonate properly and the officers were valiantly able to apprehend the man using a Taser.
The bravery awards recognise officers who have faced significant risks and challenges in the line of duty. The ceremony honoured officers up and down the country for various acts of heroism, including life-saving interventions, confronting armed suspects, and handling dangerous situations with exceptional skill and bravery.
Honouring their commitment to outstanding public service and personal sacrifice, PCC Donna Jones said: “Their actions have not only protected lives but also reinforced the public’s trust in the police force.
“These officers were confronted with a terrifying situation. In imminent danger which is incomprehensible to most of us, they went above and beyond in the line of duty to protect the community.
“Their acts of bravery are a testament to their dedication and the incredibly high standards of the Constabulary. These awards rightly highlight the extraordinary lengths police officers will go to ensure the safety and security of the public.”
Attending the event, PCC Donna Jones said: “I was delighted to watch the officers receive this national recognition. They are truly inspiring and rightly remind us of the critical role that our police force plays in maintaining peace and order.
“We owe them a debt of gratitude for their unwavering commitment to our safety.”
